OPEN POSITIONS Associate Senior Lecturer in Physics with a focus on Statistical Fluid Dynamics

The Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg is located on the main campus of Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, and has about 80 employees. The communication routes are good both nationally and internationally. The research is focused on the fields of atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter physics and spintronics, and complex systems and biophysics and is conducted in an international environment with extensive national and international collaborations. The education programs at the department include bachelor and master programs in physics, physics teachers’ training programs, as well as outreach courses in Physics aimed for the general public. The Gothenburg Physics Centre, a close collaboration with four other departments within the Faculty of Science and Chalmers University of Technology, creates an innovative environment for all researchers and students at the departments.

Specific subject description

This position is connected to the project Bottlenecks for particle growth in turbulent aerosols, supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW). The aim of the research project is to understand how small aerosol particles grow in turbulent environments.

In Gothenburg we contribute to the KAW project through the development and analysis of model systems for the dynamics of particles in turbulence. We analyse the models by means of mathematical techniques. Currently the most important question is to understand the collision dynamics of spherical and non-spherical particles in turbulence, by means of analytical model calculations.

Job assignments

The responsibility of the appointee is to contribute, in the first place, to the theoretical part of the KAW-funded project by developing and analysing statistical models for turbulent aerosols. Furthermore the appointee is expected to develop an independent research profile by establishing collaborations with research groups within and outside the physics department.

The responsibilities include undergraduate teaching in physics, as well as teaching and course responsibility on the master level in the subjects dynamical systems and computational biology. Supervision of master students in machine-learning projects as well as co-supervision of PhD students in the KAW-project is also part of the responsibilities.

The appointee is expected to teach in Swedish within two years. The university offers courses to learn Swedish as a second language.

Applicants without university-level teacher training should participate in pedagogy courses for higher education within two years of hiring.


The qualifications for this academic position are given in the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. A PhD degree in physics or a related subject area, or equivalent scientific competence is a requirement. An applicant with a foreign degree that is judged to be comparable is also eligible. In first place applicants are considered who have been awarded a PhD degree, comparable foreign degree or achieved equivalent scientific competence no more than seven years before the expiration date of this announcement. Applicants who have obtained a doctorate earlier may also be given primary consideration if there are special reasons. Special reasons are leave of absence due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Ability to teach in English or Swedish is a requirement.


Assessment of the applications will be based primarily on scientific merits and secondarily on pedagogical merits. Both will be carefully assessed.

In the assessment of scientific proficiency, special weight will be given to scientific competence relevant for the KAW-project and the other job assignments: firstly experience in the analysis of statistical models for turbulent aerosols by mathematical methods (perturbation theory, asymptotic analysis), and secondly experience in the numerical analysis of such statistical model systems. This competence is documented, firstly, by publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and secondly by the written research plan. The ability to contribute to collaborations between different research groups is also meritorious.

In the assessment of pedagogical proficiency particular emphasis will be given to demonstrated experience in teaching, and in the planning and evaluation of teaching, in subjects relevant for the appointment. The ability to teach physics on undergraduate level is meritorious. Experience in course responsibility in subjects relevant for the appointment is highly meritorious. Also experience in participating in the supervision of master and PhD students will also be assessed.

In the overall assessment of the application, consideration will be given to the skill and development potential in physics, to the ability to carry out the tasks relevant for the appointment, to interact with other staff at the department, and to contribute to a positive development of the activities at the department.

The position as associate senior lecturer is limited to four years and is defined as an appointment based on qualifications whereby the holder, if approved, is promoted to a permanent position as a Senior Lecturer. Appointment procedure

The selection process will include evaluation by experts from outside the university, guest lectures and interviews. The assessment of qualifications will take parental leave and other recognised reasons into account.
