OPEN POSITIONS Associate Senior Lecturer in climatology

The Department of Earth Sciences has 65 employees. The department has two subject areas (Physical Geography and Geology) in its teaching and research. The department curriculum is designed to train new generations of geologists, physical geographers and geographers. We have bachelor and masters programmes in Earth Sciences and in Geography as well as third-cycle education in several Earth-science specialties. Our teaching give the students skills to solve geo-scientific problems in the society working for companies and authorities. Our strongest research areas lie within climatology, biogeochemisty, petrology/geochemistry and applied geoscience. The research strategy for the department emphasizes on further development of Earth System Science.

Subject area description

Much of the department activity in physical geography is related to climatology. We are recruiting an Associate Senior Lecturer in climatology, focusing on one or more of the following fields: regional climate change, atmospheric circulation, biosphere-atmosphere interactions, and surface processes in Asia and high-latitude regions.

Job assignments

The appointment as Associate Senior Lecturer (Swedish “biträdande universitetslektor”) represents the initial step of a tenure track system with the clear intention that the chosen candidate develops their strengths and independence as a researcher.

The duties of the position include developing your research area at the department by carrying out independent research at a high international level. Your research should complement and strengthen the existing research areas within climatology at the department. You are expected to actively apply for external financing to create, build up and support a research group. You are also expected to develop your research work cooperatively within the department and externally at the national and international level.

The work duties also include a small amount of teaching in courses such as meteorology, climate modelling and other related earth-system-science courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This includes the planning and carrying out of such courses. In addition to classroom teaching, courses can involve field and lab work as well as cooperation with stakeholders in society. Additionally, you can be asked to supervise thesis work at the bachelors and masters level as well as to supervise doctoral students. It is essential that you create a good atmosphere in the classroom and that you take responsibility for assigned duties. You are expected to carry out the necessary administrative work for courses on the university web pages.

You are also expected to collaborate within the academia as well as with the surrounding society.

Candidates without university-level teacher training should participate in pedagogy courses for higher education within two years of hiring.

The successful candidate is expected to teach in Swedish within two years. The university offers courses to learn Swedish as a second language.

Eligibility

A PhD degree in a subject area relevant for the position or equivalent scientific competence is a requirement. An applicant with a foreign degree that is judged to be comparable is also eligible. Preference is given to applicants who have been awarded a PhD degree, comparable foreign degree or achieved equivalent scientific competence no more than seven years before the expiration date of this announcement. Applicants who have obtained a doctorate earlier may also be given primary consideration if there are special reasons. Special reasons are leave of absence due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Ability to teach in English or Swedish is a requirement.

Assessment

The assessment of your application will be based primarily on your scientific skill and secondarily on your pedagogical merits, which will be assessed with the same care.

When assessing scientific proficiency, emphasis will be placed on competence in climatology and especially within the research areas specified in the subject area description. The assessment will be based on publications in international journals with a peer review system. Quality and impact is more important than the total production of scientific publications. Documented success in attracting external funding in competition, experience from a new research environment after the PhD degree, and participation in national and international collaborative projects and networks are meritorious.

When assessing pedagogical proficiency, emphasis will be placed on the ability to successfully plan, perform and lead teaching as well as to develop courses. Documented ability to supervise students at different levels are meritorious.

It is also expected that the successful candidate has:

  • experience in global and/or regional climate modelling, and experience in using the NACR CCSM/CAM and/or WRF, especially WRF with data assimilation,

  • good computer skills, especially in a Linux/Unix environment, and proven skills in scientific programming with help of at least two of the following programs: Fortran, C/C++, Matlab, Python-script and Linus bash-script,

  • demonstrated experience with data visualization, and managing and analysing large datasets,

  • experience of collaboration with the surrounding society.

When appointing a member of faculty, the candidate who, after the overall assessment of proficiency and future capacity, is considered to have the best ability to perform the intended duties, cooperate with others, and contribute to a positive development of the department, is to be chosen. The overall assessment will also take into account the extent to which the candidate’s research plans are complementary to and strengthen the activities at the department.

Previous leave of absence due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances will be taken into account in the assessment and should be pointed out in connection with the list of merits and experience.

The position as associate senior lecturer is limited to four years and is defined as an appointment based on qualifications whereby the holder, if approved, is promoted to a permanent position as a Senior Lecturer. Appointment procedure

The selection process will include evaluation by experts from outside the university, interviews and guest lectures. The assessment of qualifications and experience will take into account parental leave, sick leave or other similar circumstances. The reasons and extent of absence should be specified in the application.
