OPEN POSITIONS Senior Lecturer in structural geology

The Department of Earth Sciences has 65 employees. The department has two subject areas (Physical Geography and Geology) in its teaching and research. The department curriculum is designed to train new generations of geologists, physical geographers and geographers. We have bachelor and masters programmes in Earth Sciences and in Geography as well as third-cycle education in several Earth-science specialties. Our teaching give the students skills to solve geo-scientific problems in the society working for companies and authorities. Our strongest research areas lie within climatology, biogeochemisty, petrology/geochemistry and applied geoscience. The research strategy for the department emphasizes on further development of Earth System Science.

Structural geology

Subject area description

We are recruiting a Senior Lecturer in structural geology, focusing on one or more of the following fields: microtextural analysis; fluid flow in brittle and/or ductile regimes; hydrothermal processes and ore formation; and geo/thermo-chronological studies. The research within the framework of the position should be complementary to and strengthen the existing activities at the department.

Job assignments

The main duties are research and teaching.

The duties of the position include developing your research area at the department by carrying out independent research at a high international level. You are expected to actively apply for external financing to create, build up and support a research group. You are also expected to develop your research work cooperatively within the department and externally at the national and international level.

Work duties also include teaching in the earth-science programme on the bachelors and masters level. This includes the planning and carrying out of such courses. In addition to classroom teaching, courses can involve field and lab work as well as cooperation with stakeholders in society. Additionally, you can be asked to supervise thesis work at the bachelors and masters level as well as to supervise doctoral students. It is essential that you create a good atmosphere in the classroom and that you take responsibility for assigned duties.

Some administrative duties are also part of the job assignments as well as collaborations within the academia and with the surrounding society.

Candidates without university-level teacher training should participate in pedagogy courses for higher education within two years of hiring.

The successful candidate is expected to teach in Swedish within two years. The university offers courses to learn Swedish as a second language.

Eligibility

The general qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. The candidate should have a PhD degree or equivalent foreign degree in a subject area relevant for the position. Ability to teach in English or Swedish is a requirement.

Assessment

Assessment of the applications will be based primarily on scientific and pedagogical skills in structural geology, which will be given equal importance; both will be carefully assessed. The assessment will mainly focus on the candidate’s activities the last ten years.

When assessing scientific proficiency, emphasis will be placed on competence in structural geology, within the research areas specified in the subject area description. The assessment will be based on publications in international journals, with a peer review system. Quality and impact is more important than the total production of scientific publications. Documented success in attracting external funding from national and international funding agencies, and participation in international collaborative projects and networks are meritorious.

When assessing pedagogical proficiency, emphasis will be placed on the ability to successfully plan, perform and lead teaching as well as develop courses. Documented ability to supervise students at different levels are meritorious. The candidate is expected to have experience of different teaching methods, especially field-based teaching with a focus on local geology and geological mapping.

Assessment of the applications will be based secondary on experience of and ability to collaborate with authorities, industry and other stakeholders. Experience in field-based structural geology related to geological mapping or prospecting and experience of applications in societal infrastructure projects and geological raw materials are merits. Documented administrative experience, leadership, including the ability to lead and develop personnel, are also meritorious.

When appointing a member of faculty, the candidate who after the overall assessment of proficiency and future capacity is considered to have the best ability to perform the intended duties, cooperate with others, and contribute to a positive development of the department, is to be chosen. The overall assessment will also take into account the extent to which the research plans are complementary to and strengthen the activities at the department.
