About

How is it possible to provide security for people, states, regions, the globe, and still attend to the basic fundaments of democratic principles? Today’s global challenges make it imperative to rethink the concepts of security and democracy and this course gives you the tools and perspectives to engage with the most pressing questions on democracy and security. During the course, you will explore conceptual tools for navigating an ever-changing global political landscape.

In the course, you will discuss the following questions:

  • Why and when do democracies go to war?
  • How will global order look like in the face retreating liberalism?
  • What does the global phenomenon of the privatization of security imply for democracy?
  • What is the appeal of different populist regimes both, in the global North and the global South?
  • What are the potential answers of liberalism?

In lectures, seminars, and group work you will engage with and discuss approaches to global security and global democracy as well as to the discontent they currently face.
