SASUF is funded by STINT, the South African National Research Foundation, the Department of Higher Education in South Africa and the participating universities.

Short description

Strategic internationalization project for strengthening ties between Sweden and South Africa in research, education and innovation. This SASUF project is lead by Uppsala University whereby the University of Gothenburg is a strategic partner in this 37-institute consortium. The GU-SASUF project is coordinated by the University of Gothenburg international office. In a collaborative mode, it connects universities with funding agencies, industry, ministries & surrounding society in working towards the Sustainable Development Goals. Physical meetings, workshops and thematic seminars are maintained periodically throughout the project period.

Project themes

The project is designed towards joint publications, research projects, co-supervision of post-graduate and PhD-students. It includes six different themes and challenges summarized in:

Theme 1: Climate change, natural resources and sustainability

Theme 2: Transforming Higher Education Curricula: the nexus between academia and society

Theme 3: Social transformation through change: knowledge and social development strategies for society

Theme 4: Understanding the burden of disease in Sweden and South Africa and its impact on the health systems of the two countries in the future

Theme 5: Urbanisation and cities in the 21st Century

Theme 6: Digital technologies, big data, and cybersecurity
