Research projects

In recent years, the political scientists at the University of Gothenburg have been very successful in the competition for external research funding. This means that there are many interesting research projects going on here at the Department. We share our knowledge with others through scientific articles, books, reports and lectures, blogposts and podcasts. We also work extensively as experts in various contexts, not least in connection with election campaigns.

Some examples of our research projects

The scientific study of politics

Political science is often defined as "the scientific study of politics". But what is "politics"? Politics is sometimes defined as the legitimate struggle for the distribution of values in a society - for example, the struggle over how society's economic resources should be distributed. Sometimes politics is narrowly defined, as national and local public decision-making. Sometimes politics is broadly defined, where the personal - or even the private - is also political.

At the Department of Political Science we conduct research in various fields of political science, such as political theory and philosophy, international politics, political parties and political behavior, gender and politics, democracy and other forms of government, constitutional studies, local politics, sustainable development, public administration and governance.
