Published

Senior Lecturer Patrik Ström has been selected to join the expert “High Level Group on Business Services” recently set up by the EU Commission. The group’s job is to produce recommendations to strengthen the internal market for business services.

How did you in particular come to be selected?
I was invited to take part because of my research into advanced services and internationalisation, as well as the fact that I’m President of The European Association for Research on Services.

What will the group be working on?
The group will be working on the issue of how the internal market for services can be developed, as well as issues relating to the international competitiveness of European business services. The intention is that the work will result in recommendations to strengthen the internal market for business services. It will involve both general and more sector-specific recommendations.

Who else is in the group?
The group consists of 19 members, representing the worlds of academia, business and policy.

When does work at start and how long will it continue?
The first meeting took place on 14 March in Brussels. It was attended by the Vice-President of the Commission, who is also in charge of the Directorate General for Enterprise and Industry, as well as the Commissioner from the Directorate General for Internal Market and Services. During the first meeting a work plan was drawn up and small groups were established to focus on various sectors. The results of the group’s work will be presented in about one year’s time.
