Luka Jelusic, a landscape architect and a furniture designer/maker, frequently involved with collaborative community-based projects. He is teaching at Wood Oriented Furniture Design at HDK-Valand Steneby, and working on a project basis for University of Washington Design/Build Study Abroad program.
Vandkunsten. Building community is an essential drive for the architects at Copenhagen-based Vandkunsten Architects. The office was established around 1970 when a group of young counter-culturals – mostly architects, won a vision competition for low-rise high-density housing where they introduced landscape-based urban planning and self-organization. The ideal then and now is a high degree of end-user involvement and carefully designed social spaces. Today the company is still a front-runner in affordable housing, co-living, and the ongoing development of sustainable and resource friendly architecture and urban planning. In the lecture examples will introduce Vandkunsten’s approach to community building.
Anne-Mette Manelius is an architect, researcher and communicator at Vandkunsten. She us currently finishing up the very first monograph about the office and she is engaged in an EU research project about the future cities without waste.
Christian Hermansen Cordua, Professor of Architecture, The Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Studied and practiced architecture in Chile, the USA and Britain. From 1984 to 2002 he worked in the Mackintosh School of Architecture, where he was Director of Post Graduate Studies, and with Elder and Cannon Architects, where the work won numerous awards. In 2002 he moved to Oslo, Norway where he was appointed Professor and Head of the Institute of Architecture.
Dare2Build / Emílio Brandão, Shea Hagy, Samuel Dias Carvalho / a cross-disciplinary practice-based educational initiative, for architecture and civil engineering masters students, focusing on designing and building projects in the Million Homes Programme suburbs of Gothenburg (where Chalmers has a 12-year old active base), and in partnership with a wide variety of stakeholders and local communities. All projects are started and developed under the Social Inclusion masters studio, with the support of a complex co-creation process and methods for local citizen participation in architecture and urban design.
Onioncollective / Jessica Prendergrast is one of five Directors of Onion Collective CIC, a place-based social enterprise working in the small coastal town of Watchet in South West England. Their work cuts across social, cultural and environmental regeneration and seeks to demonstrate that a community-driven approach to economic development can be transformative to opportunities even in small isolated places. Over the last eight years, they have established a reputation for ambitious community work. They are due to open their flagship cultural project on the harbourside in Watchet this summer and are part of a ground-breaking partnership to establish the world’s first community bio-manufacturing facility, using fungus to create new products.
Marcus Jahnke has PhD in design from HDK, the School of Design and Crafts, and has been working with different themes related to urban development, both as a researcher and as responsible for the urban development group in the Swedish research instutite RISE. He has more recently engaged in issues related to rural development, not least in his new role as responsible for the Centre for Sustainable Urban Futures. Marcus will talk about the centre and give examples from a couple of projects.
