Summary: Cochlear implants (CI’s) have been around since the 1970s as experimental devices to return hearing to the deaf. Technological progress, miniaturization, digital system design and psychophysics have all had profound impacts on the field of CI’s and on the performance of their users. Today CI can treat most types of deafness and age of implantation has plummeted from 60+ years to 6 months old. The future of CI’s lies in the development of novel materials, surgical methods, and the creation of OR assisting technologies to maximize each patient’s performance. This talk will cover where we are with these technologies and where I see the field going in the future.
