Summary: Hand surgery in Sweden is strongly connected to Gothenburg. It was here that the first hand surgery ward in Scandinavia was established in the late 1940s by Professor Erik Moberg.

The human hand has a complex anatomy. Function of the hand is based on a delicate interaction between several moving anatomical structures as well as interaction between the peripheral and central nervous system.

he hand can be seen as a sense organ – as an extension of the brain, making it possible to explore the surrounding world. Furthermore, the hand’s abilities to fine motor skills as well as power grips are essential for our ability to perform our daily activities. Due to the complex anatomy and small structures in the hand treatment of injuries and disorders are often difficult. However, advances in technology and neurobiology during the last decades have made it possible to refine treatment in several areas in hand surgery.

This lecture will focus on how new technical and neurobiological knowledge in such areas as virtual operative planning and 3D printing, guided plasticity, bionics and small joint arthroplasty have been translated into better treatment regimes in hand surgery.
