PhD Courses in Proteomics

The Proteomics Core Facility gives two PhD courses. SC00033 is a one-week course focusing on sample preparation of proteomic samples, while SC00003 is a two-week course including basic theory as well as practical applications.


The two-week course includes lectures, seminars, demonstrations, and individual exercises. The following basic topics on proteomics will be covered:

  • Introduction to proteomics
  • Sample handling and preparation
  • Separation techniques and strategies
  • Mass spectrometry theory
  • Quantitative mass spectrometry
  • Characterization of post-translational modifications
  • Database matching and proteomic tools
  • Experimental design and interpretation of quantitative proteomic results
  • Bioinformatics and pathway analysis using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis
  • Practical experiments covering quantitative proteomics, phosphoproteomics and in-gel digest for protein identification

Invited speakers will highlight cutting-edge research techniques in proteomics and related fields. Practical exercises and demonstrations during two full weeks will illustrate hands-on techniques in proteomics including posttranslational modification analysis, mass spectrometry of peptides, quantitative mass spectrometry and database searches.


The course is a one-week theoretical course covering the same topics as SC00003, but with a focus on sample preparation of proteomic samples for mass spectrometric analysis. Practical demonstration on the MS instruments are included, but no other practical exercises in the laboratory.
