Participation in the HLPF 2025

The University of Gothenburg will participate in the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), taking place in New York City from July 14 to 23.

Highlighting SDG 8 through a side event

Among the many side events enriching the forum’s agenda, the SDG 8 Initiative will host a session on July 22. The focus is on how academia can support policies and partnerships that provide decent work for all and foster sustainable economic growth.

The side event aligns with this year’s HLPF theme:
“Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals for leaving no one behind.”

SDG 8 is one of five goals under in-depth review at the 2025 forum, alongside SDGs 3, 5, 14, and 17.

A global academic and institutional partnership

A strong international coalition of academic and institutional partners is co-hosting and endorsing the event. These include:

From research to policy

Together, participants will reflect on key lessons from the past decade and chart strategies for action beyond 2030. As part of the University of Gothenburg’s contribution, a recently published book, explores SDG 8’s targets and connects academic research to concrete policy recommendations.

Open-access: Achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 8: Economic Growth and Decent Work For All, taylorfrancis.com

Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, requires resolute collaboration between academia, governments, and international organizations. Universities are powerful catalysts for change, turning research and education into real-world solutions for inclusive and sustainable economies. To fully unlock this potential, Member States must invest in research and higher education and treat academia as a strategic partner. International organizations play a vital role in bridging research and policy, especially by supporting data access and fostering global collaboration. This session will show how knowledge, when empowered and connected, can drive transformative impact.

Join us as we discuss academia’s role in shaping policies and partnerships that create decent work opportunities while driving meaningful economic progress.
