About Wade Bell
My project focuses on the cultural and ecological transformations depicted in works of American road literature written between 1940 and 1970. What is the relationship between capitalism, technology and the environment? How is this relationship explored in diverse depictions of road travel ranging from Henry Miller's Air Conditioned Nightmare (1940), to Joan Didion's classic Play It as It Lays (1970)?
I approach my subject using an interdisciplinary framework including insights from Merleau-Ponty's flesh ontology, radical geography, eco-feminism, environmental ecology and ethics, as well as political commentary grounded in a post-Cartesian, eco-Marxist critique of capitalism and commodity relations.
