About Marie Carlson

Marie Carlson is professor of sociology at the Department of Sociology and Work Science at the University of Gotenburg. Her main research interests are cultural studies and the sociology of education with a special focus on ethnicity, gender, class and power relations. After her PhD dissertation (2002) on Turkish immigrant women’s encounters with the Swedish welfare state in terms of language courses she has worked in several multidisciplinary projects – often in a transnational perspective and also in a Turkish context. In 2007 she co-edited, together with Fatma Gök and Annika Rabo, Education in ’Multicultural’ Societies. Turkish and Swedish Perspectives. Transactions Vol 18, Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul. This anthology was also published in Turkish 2011: Çokkültürlü Toplumlarda Egitim – Türkiye ve Isveç’ten Örnekler. Derleyenler Marie Carlson, Annika Rabo & Fatma Gök. Current projects: 1) Transnational Student Mobility in Higher Education in Asia - An interdisciplinary study of young people's strategies and living conditions (Fundings: Swedish Research Council/UVK). 2) Future citizens in pedagogical texts and education policies. Examples from Lebanon, Norway, Sweden and Turkey (Fundings: Swedish Research Council/UVK).
