My thesis, provisionally entitled In the Light of the Righteous Predecessors, is on transnational Islamic revivalist movements in Sweden, specifically Saudi Arabian Salafi movements and the Indian Jama'at al-Tabligh movement. Its main focus is on how Salafis and Tablighis construct and reconstruct meaning and identity through individual and collective activities and narratives. The empirical material consists primarily of interviews and participant observations with individuals involved in social settings that are influenced by these movements'/networks' religious interpretation. The thesis will employ theories and perspectives drawn from research on new social movements, transnationalism/translocality and collective identity.
