I am looking at the cycling of biogenic elements in the seafloor of brackish and marine settings. I am interested in the effects of spatial and temporal oxygen gradients on the biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as related elements. My work has mostly focused on the biogeochemical effects of a major Baltic inflow, which oxygenated areas of the Baltic Sea that previously had been long-term anoxic. We do most of our work with benthic chamber landers, which allow us to measure the exchange of solutes and gases between sediment and water column.
