Research

In my Ph.D. thesis from 1987, dealing with the music presented in the Swedish qualification rounds for the Eurovision Song Contest, I investigate changes over time in mainstream popular music. Since then my research has been directed mainly towards the history and analysis of popular music and various aspects of music and media, such as music video analysis and broadcasting music history.

At present (2019), I’m working on a research project on the rise and decline of Swedish hi-fi culture.

Teaching

Since the end of the 1970s, I have taught several of the subdisciplines of musicology at universities in Sweden, Denmark and Norway. In recent years I’ve primarily been active as supervisor and seminar leader in the department’s Ph.D. programmes.

External relations and research information

In the last decade I’ve participated in some 30 radio programmes and given several lectures at the ”Faculty of Arts Days” events. In addition to articles in the daily press and popular-science journals, I have published some 300 entries in the Swedish encyclopedia Nationalencyklopedin, to which I have contributed since 1990, since 1997 with a commission as expert within the field of popular music.
