Jan-Dirk Schmöcker is an Associate Professor within the Department of Urban Management at Kyoto University. He initially studied at the Technical University Berlin and then graduated from the University of Newcastle in 2000 with an MSc in Transport Engineering and Operations (Distinction). After completing his MSc he stayed at Newcastle University as a Research Assistant under Professor Michael G H Bell before joining Imperial College in 2002. During his 4 years in London Jan-Dirk worked on several projects including metro benchmarking and projects funded by Transport for London investigating travel behaviour of older people. In June 2004 the university's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering granted him two year funding for the completion of his PhD which has the title "Dynamic capacity-constrained transit assignment". In 2007 Jan-Dirk left Imperial College London, joining Tokyo Institute of Technology as a Visiting Associate Professor. In 2010 he took up his current position at Kyoto University, which is funded by the department's Undergraduate School of Global Engineering. The school has recently established a new undergraduate course program entirely taught in English. Within this programme Jan-Dirk is teaching mathematics as well as transport planning related courses. Besides teaching, his research interests have since further broadened to include accessibility and land-use as well as acceptability of transport policies, though a main research focus remains to be public transport assignment and network reliability.
