Nagano-Madsen Yasuko – Faculty of Arts, Dept of Languages and Literatures YASUKO NAGANO-MADSEN – born in Kochi, Japan, in 1952 – studied at Kochi Women’s University and Edinburgh University before taking her doctor's degree in phonetics at Lund University in 1992, Mora and prosodic coordination – a phonetic study of Japanese, Eskimo, and Yoruba. She was previously assistant lecturer in linguistics at Ilorin University and subsequently lecturer in linguistics at Ibadan University in Nigeria. She held the post of research fellow in Japanese at Göteborg University 1994–1998 and was subsequently employed in 1999 as lecturer and became senior lecturer in 2000. Appointed from 1 September 2006 as professor in Japanese with the emphasis on linguistics.
Nerman Olle – Faculty of Science, Matematical Statistics
Neutze Richard – Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry RICHARD NEUTZE – born in Ashburton, New Zealand, in 1969 – earned his first degree and defended his thesis in physics at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. He has subsequently held postdoctoral posts at Oxford University, England, and the University of Tübingen, Germany. At Oxford he started working with biophysics, and after his stay in Germany he moved to Uppsala University where he held a post as junior research fellow. In 2000 he moved to Chalmers, where he became assistant professor in biophysics in 2004. His research team studies the structure and function of membrane proteins in cells using X-ray crystallography. Appointed from 1 July 2006 as professor in biochemistry.

HOLGER NILSSON, born in Lund in 1956, completed his doctorate in 1985 at the Department of Physiology at Göteborg University with the thesis "Adrenergic nervous control of resistance and capacitance vessels", after which he held a one-year post-doc position at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, University of Vermont, USA, and was research associate with the Swedish Medical research Council at the University of Gothenburg 1986-1990. He became qualified physician in 1991. He then moved to the Department of Pharmacology at Aarhus University in Denmark, where he became lecturer in 1992. He was visiting professor at the Department of Physiology at Lund University 1998-2001. He moved to the Department of Physiology at Aarhus University in 1998. From 1 November 2007 he is professor in physiology with the emphasis on cardiovascular physiology.

Nilsson Michael - The Sahlgrenska Academy, Dept of Clinical Neurosciences MICHAEL NILSSON – born in Uddevalla in 1962 – qualified as a doctor at the University of Gothenburg in 1990. He defended his thesis in 1992 at the University of Gothenburg on Astrocytes, neurotransmitters and valproate. In 1997–1998 he was visiting researcher at
Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia. He became senior lecturer in neurobiology in 1999, double specialist in neurology and rehabilitation medicine in 2000 and head physician in 2002. Since 2000 he has been head of rehabilitation medicine at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Appointed from 1 December 2006 as adjunct professor in rehabilitation medicine.

Nordgren Svante - The Sahlgrenska Academy, Dept of Surgery SVANTE NORDGREN was born I Visby in 1945. He studied at Karolinska Institutet and the University of Gothenburg and was employed as staff surgeon in 1975.
His research originally focused on gastrointestinal physiology. In 1980 he defended his thesis, Neurohumoral mechanisms controlling large intestinal blood flow and motility, at the the University of Gothenburg in 1980. Professor in surgery from 1 March, 2001. Presently the field of research is within medical education.

Nordström Bengt – IT Faculty, Computing Science Bengt Nordström was born in Luleå in 1949. He received his PhD from Umeå University in 1978 and became professor in Computing Science in Gothenburg in 1986. His research interest is in logic of programming and language technology - the border between natural languages and artficial languages.

Noren Kerstin – Faculty of Arts, Dept of Swedish KERSTIN NORÉN – born in Borås in 1950 – defended her thesis at the University of Gothenburg in 1990 in semantics of Swedish phrasal verbs. Shortly thereafter she was awarded a junior research fellowship in lexicology. Since then her research field has expanded to encompass variation in words and expressions in different contexts, from textbooks in scientific subjects to everyday conversations. She has also taken an interest in contrastive perspectives on Swedish words and expressions. An interest in the role of universities in society subsequently emerged, and in parallel with her research she has held various administrative posts within the world of the university during the last ten years, including that of Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Gothenburg, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the same university and since the turn of the year Vice-Chancellor of Karlstad University. Appointed from 1 December 2006 as professor in Swedish language.
Norkko Alf - The Faculty of Science - ALF NORKKO Born: 1967 Title of thesis: The role of drifting macroalgal mats in structuring coastal zoobenthos
Alf Norkko was born of Finnish parents in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. He obtained his doctorate in marine biology at Åbo Akademi University in 1997, with a thesis on the significance of drifting algae for the animal communities in soft sediments. He became an associate professor of marine ecology in 2001. He has worked for more than five years at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand and has also taken part in a large number of expeditions to the Antarctic. He worked as a Marie Curie scholar at the University of Gothenburg for two years. Since 2005 has been a leading scientist in benthic ecology at the Marine Research Centre of the Finnish Environment Institute in Helsinki. He has been appointed Visiting Professor of Marine Benthic Ecology at the Department of Marine Ecology.

Norrby Per-Ola – Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry PER-OLA NORRBY – born in Huddinge in 1962 – earned his degree in chemical engineering at The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH). He defended his thesis in 1992 at KTH, Development of Molecular Mechanics for Use in (ç3-allyl)palladium Chemistry and in 1995 became senior lecturer in organic chemistry. After postdoctoral studies, firstly with professor Barry Sharpless in San Diego and then with professor Tommy Liljefors in Copenhagen, he became associate research professor at the Danish University of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1997. In 2000 he became associate professor in organic chemistry at the Technical University of Denmark. Appointed from 1 November 2006 as professor in organic chemistry with the emphasis on synthesis.
Norrsell Ulf - The Sahlgrenska Academy, Dept of Physiology (Emeritus) ULF NORRSELL - born in Vadstena 1937. Defended the doctoral thesis, “An experimental study of central nervous structures involved in tactile sensibility” in 1966 following graduate studies in Lund, Warszawa, and Gothenburg. Lecturer in physiology at Göteborg University 1967, and senior lecturer following 1972. International research fellow at the department of psychobiology, California institute of technology between 1968 and 69. Appointed professor in psychobiology at the Sahlgrenska Academy from March 1st 1984. Has investigated and published on tactile, visual and auditory function and sensori-motor function in man and animals under anaesthetized and awake, intact and injured conditions, with electrophysiological, behavioural and neuropsychological techniques. Has published essays on the history of neuroscience.

Nyström Maria - The Faculty of Fine Applied And Performing Arts - MARIA NYSTRÖM Born: 1955

Maria Nyström was born in Kungälv and obtained her architecture degree from the Faculty of Engineering, Lund Institute of Technology (LTH), Lund University. She has since worked on research, projects and teaching in developing countries at the Lund Centre for Habitat Studies. In 1994, she submitted her dissertation and in 1997 was employed at LTH as an associate professor. She has been Cullinan Professor at Rice University and since 1998 has been collaborating with NASA on designs for living on other planets and in space. She was Adjunct Professor in Design for Sustainable Development at Chalmers University of Technology in 2007, (nosubsequently lecturer )and in 2009 she got the docent degree and professor the same year at Chalmers School of Atchitecture. She was appointed Professor of Design at the School of Design and Crafts on 1 September 2009.
