About Lowie Vanfleteren

Lowie Vanfleteren is currently the head of COPD-center at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, lecturer and researcher in Pulmonary Medicine at University of Gothenburg.

In June 2005 he obtained his medical degree and shortly afterwards he started his training in internal medicine in the Atrium medical center in Heerlen (the Netherlands).

From august 2007 he was working as a resident in respiratory medicine in Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC+), where he obtained his degree as a chest physician in august 2011. From 2011 to 2018 he worked as a chest physician in CIRO+, a center of expertise in chronic organ failure, in Horn, (the Netherlands) with secondment to the department of respiratory medicine in Maastricht University Medical Center and the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences of Maastricht university. Next to his work in pulmonary rehabilitation, he set up collaboration with the center of home mechanical ventilation in Maastricht for the treatment of respiratory failure in advanced COPD, initiated a referral center for endobronchial lung volume reduction and lung volume reduction surgery, and set up a multidisciplinary treatment approach for severe asthma in Maastricht University Medical Hospital. In February 2015 he obtained his PhD on “COPD and comorbidities” at the university of Maastricht.

In 2018 he moved to Gothenburg, Sweden and started to work in a combination position as associate professor at the Institute of Medicine of the University of Gothenburg and as a lung physician and head of the COPD-center at Sahlgrenska University Medical Hospital in Gothenburg Sweden.

Research and international collaboration

Lowie Vanfleteren's clinical and scientific focus is on COPD. He is a principal investigator of several investigator-initiated studies and supervisor of PhD and Postdoc students.

Internationally Lowie is a member of twelve collaborative initiatives, including the American Thoracic Society and participating in the Program Committee of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation assembly. He is the representative to the Early Career Members Committee for the clinical assembly of the European Respiratory Society for 2018-2022. He is associate editor for the Journals Respiration and ERJ open research. He participates in the steering committee of the Swedish Airway register.

Awards, citations and distinctions

Lowie Vanfleteren has published over 100 scientific publications and has been invited speaker to over 80 conferences and symposias. He is a winner of several awards: European Respiratory Journal 2016 Top Reviewer; Best Abstract in Pulmonary Rehabilitation; European Respiratory Society annual meeting; Travel Award, funded by the national emphysema foundation; American Thoracic Society annual meeting; assembly of clinical problems.
