OPEN POSITIONS Research assistant

The Department of Marine Sciences, the Faculty of Science, University of Gothenburg, was recently launched (July 1, 2015) with the purpose to achieve the vision of "A University with marine research, teaching and cooperation of the highest international class". The department has about 110 employees - researchers, teachers, PhD students, technicians and administrators. The department carries out teaching and research in the various marine specializations, biology, oceanography, chemistry, marine geology, conservation of underwater cultural heritage, and environmental science. Research is conducted both within specialized individual projects as well as within larger interdisciplinary programs. The Department is situated in Gothenburg and at the University’s research stations at Tjärnö and Kristineberg. This position is placed in Gothenburg. Job assignments

This position consists of analysis of the microbiome associated with the diatom Skeletonema marinoi. Daily tasks include data management, assembly and annotation of various whole genome sequenced bacterial datasets and taxonomic classification of the organisms being studied.


We are looking for a person who has completed a MSc in Bioinformatics and has a background in prokaryote genomics. The successful candidate will have experience with genome assembly of PacBio data using FALCON, HGAP and Canu, as well as phylotaxonomic analysis and annotation of whole genome sequence (WGS) data. Experience with taxonomic classification of prokaryotes using other techniques is also required as well as very good English language skills. This position will include large-scale data management tasks and version controlling of files using the software git and documenting the work in wikis and public and private git-repositories. Experience with submitting WGS data to BioProject and SRA at NCBI (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/) is a requirement. Experiences with bioinformatic work with diatom reference genomes and their associated microbiomes is a merit.


This is a shortterm employment during 6 month with startdate 2017-06-15 or by agreement. This position will be placed at the department of Marine Sciences in Gothenburg.
