OPEN POSITIONS Associate Senior Lecturer in Mathematics - 1-2 positions

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology has about 200 employees and is one of the largest departments of mathematical sciences in the Nordic countries. The department consists of three divisions: Division of Algebra and Geometry, Division of Analysis and Probability, and Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

Specific subject description

 We are looking for one to two Associated Senior Lecturers to the Division of Algebra and Geometry.

Within the division research is conducted in several areas of mathematics, such as Algebra, Algebraic geometry, Arakelov theory, Several complex variables, Kähler geometry, Number theory etc. The research within the position should be complementary to and strengthen this research activity at the division.

At the division research in Mathematics Education is also conducted.

Job assignments

The work tasks mainly consist of research in mathematics, and at least half of the working hours should be devoted to research. The duties also include teaching and, possibly supervision, up to a total of 25%. Outreach activities can also occur.

You should display initiative in seeking challenges and opportunities for development in your work, dare to question established practices but also adhere to decision and priorities. Many of your duties will be carried out in conjunction with others, so you must be willing to listen and cooperate.

If you have no courses in university teacher’s training you are supposed to take such courses within two years from the start of the employment.

You are supposed to be able to teach in Swedish within two years. The university offers courses in Swedish.


The qualifications for this academic position are given in the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. A PhD degree in a subject area relevant for the position or equivalent scientific competence is a requirement. An applicant with a foreign degree that is judged to be comparable is also eligible. In first place applicants are considered who have been awarded a PhD degree or achieved equivalent scientific competence no more than seven years before the expiration date of this announcement. Applicants who have obtained a doctorate earlier may also be given primary consideration if there are special reasons. Special reasons are leave of absence due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Ability to teach in English or Swedish is a requirement.


The assessment of your application will be based at first hand on your scientific skill and at second hand on your pedagogical merits, which will be assessed with the same care.

When assessing your scientific proficiency, special attention is paid to your competence in mathematics, primarily documented by publications of high quality. Quality is more important than quantity. Research with important contributions after your PhD degree as well as international scientific cooperation are considered as strong merits.

When assessing your pedagogical merits, special emphasis is given to your ability to successfully plan and teach courses in mathematics.

The overall assessment of your application will take into account your proficiency and potential for development in mathematics, your ability to carry out the duties of the position, cooperate with others, and contribute to a positive development of the department. The overall assessment will also take into account to what extent your research plans will strengthen and be complementary to the existing research activities at the division for Algebra and geometry.

Previous leave of absence due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances will be taken into account in the assessment and should be pointed out in connection with the list of merits and experience.

The position as associate senior lecturer is limited to four years and is defined as an appointment based on qualifications whereby the holder, if approved, is promoted to a permanent position as a Senior Lecturer. Criteria for promotion from associate senior lecturer to senior lecturer are established in ”Procedural rules for promotion from associate senior lecturer to senior lecturer at the Faculty of Science” (decision 2013-05-03, http://science.gu.se/digitalAssets/1503/1503712_procedural-rules-for-promotion-from-associate-senior-lecturer-to-senior-lecturer.pdf).

Appointment procedure

The selection process will include evaluation by experts from outside the department, interviews, guest lectures, and/or research seminars. The assessment of qualifications will take parental leave and other recognised reasons into account.
