OPEN POSITIONS Senior Lecturer in Molecular Genetics

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) performs high quality research and education in three main areas: biomolecular sciences, fundamental chemistry and environmental sciences. Our research ranges from atomic and molecular physics to cells and multicellular organisms, and often illustrates the interplay between chemistry and biology. The department hosts approximately 45 researchers/lecturers and 75 PhD students.

The department is responsible for education programs in chemistry, organic chemistry, medical chemistry, molecular biology, genomics and systems biology. We contribute also to teaching in the programs of biology, atmospheric science, environmental science and marine science as well as in pharmacology, teacher education and civil engineering. Furthermore, the department has research and advisory contacts with several industries and the general public.

Molecular genetics

Subject area description

Current research in genetics and molecular biology within our department has a strong medical orientation. To strengthen and develop this area, and to stimulate the transition from fundamental research to the clinic, we especially seek applicants with experience in translational medicine, drug development, screening for candidate drugs, protection of intellectual property, etc. To maximize fruitful interactions with the existing research groups working in genetics and molecular biology, we seek an experienced PI working with one of the established animal model organisms for genetic studies (Mus musculus, Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster or Danio rerio) to address questions in the fields of metabolism such as, but not limited to, diabetes, lipid metabolism, metabolic syndrome, etc.

Job assignments

The successful applicant is expected to develop and lead a strong research program that complements the present research activities at the department. The job assignments include planning independent research projects, supervising students and post-doctoral and other research personnel, and contributing to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level in areas related to genetics, cell biology and molecular biology. The successful applicant is also expected to collaborate with external partners, for example with the pharmaceutical or biotechnology sectors, schools and governmental authorities. Some administrative duties are also part of the job assignments.

Research in our department is mainly externally funded, and the candidate is expected to attract substantial external funding for her or his research.

The successful candidate is expected to teach in Swedish within two years. The university offers courses to learn Swedish as a second language.

Applicants without university-level teacher training should participate in pedagogy courses for higher education within two years of hiring.

Eligibility

The general qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg.

The applicant should have a PhD in genetics, molecular biology or a closely related area relevant for the position. Ability to teach in English or Swedish is a requirement.

Assessment

Assessment of the applications will be based primarily on scientific merits and secondarily on pedagogical merits; both will be carefully assessed.

When assessing scientific proficiency, emphasis will be placed on independent research in molecular genetics. The assessment will be based on publications in leading international journals, supervision of PhD students, success in attracting external funding from both national and international funding agencies, invitations to conferences and scientific assignments. The ability to develop and lead research activities with medical relevance will also be assessed.

The pedagogical merits will be assessed through well-documented pedagogical experience with relevance to genetics, cell biology and molecular biology. The assessment will include the ability to plan, perform and evaluate teaching, supervision and examination.

Documented administrative experience, leadership, including the ability to lead and develop personnel, and the ability to interact and collaborate with the surrounding society are also meritorious.

The overall assessment of the applications will take into account proficiency and potential for development, ability to carry out the duties of the position, cooperate with others, and contribute to a positive development of the department. The overall assessment will also take into account the extent to which the research plans are complementary to and strengthen the research activities at the department.

Previous leave of absence due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances will be taken into account in the assessment and should be pointed out in the list of merits and experience.

Appointment procedure

The selection process will include evaluation by experts from outside the department, interviews and guest lectures.
