Subject area

Physics with focus on the Teachers’ training program

Subject area description

The Department of Physics has a long-term commitment within the Teachers’ training program at the University of Gothenburg. This education is in an expansive phase and the need for natural science teachers is very extensive. The department’s assignment is to participate in several of the teachers’ training programs for which the university is entitled to award a degree. The Department of Physics also conducts continuing education aimed at school development and continuing education for teachers and preschool teachers in collaboration with both the Swedish Agency for Education (Swedish: Skolverket) and the Co-ordination Board for the Teachers’ Education (Swedish: Samordningsnämnden för lärarutbildning / SOL) at the University of Gothenburg.

The department’s assignment includes both teaching and participation in various collegiate contexts such as program councils where the university departments participating in teachers’ training programs meet. Within the framework of the teachers’ training program assignment, the Department of Physics also participates in relevant forums for teachers’ training programs at the Faculty of Science.

Pedagogical development and education for the department's teaching staff have high priority, which involves close cooperation with the Unit for Pedagogical Development and Interactive Learning (Swedish: Enheten för pedagogisk utveckling och interaktivt lärande / PIL). The department also has an involvement in the university-based research school Centre for Education Science and Teacher Research (Swedish: Centrum för utbildningsvetenskap och lärarforskning / CUL) where the supervision of doctoral students contributes to guaranteeing a scientific foundation for the department's educational development.

Job assignments

The work assignments are focused on the department’s cooperation with the Co-ordination Board for the Teachers’ Education (Swedish: Samordningsnämnden för lärarutbildning / SOL) and the department's teaching activities in physics and technology, pedagogical development, quality assurance of programs and teaching administration. This includes administrative responsibility, contacts with other units, both inside and outside the University of Gothenburg, which are involved in teachers’ training programs, responsibility for students’ vocational education (Swedish: Verksamhetsförlagd utbildning / VFU) and supervision of degree projects for the students at the teachers’ training program. Teaching and Learning in Higher Education at the Faculty of Education and the Unit for Pedagogical Development and Interactive Learning (Swedish: Enheten för pedagogisk utveckling och interaktivt lärande” / PIL) is included in the work tasks as well as collaborative assignments aimed at the public and the Swedish school system. In addition to supervision of PhD students at the research school Centre for Education Science and Teacher Research (Swedish: Centrum för utbildningsvetenskap och lärarforskning / CUL), there is also time included for own research within the assignment.
