OPEN POSITIONS Post-doc in biology

At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics and combinations of these fields in order to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment.

The department is placed at three different localities: in Gothenburg Botanical garden, at Medicinarberget in Gothenburg, and at the marine research station that is run by the Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Infrastructure-Kristineberg.
The current position is placed at the Gothenburg Botanical Garden.

Postdoctoral position:Building the tree of life from molecular sequences

Project description

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled person to work with building the Tree (or Network) of Life – large molecular phylogenetic trees linking all species sequenced to date. This work will be mainly carried out within the framework of SUPERSMART (http://www.supersmart-project.org/), a multi-national research initiative recently published in Systematic Biology (https://doi.org/10.1093/sysbio/syw066).

Job assignments

  • Further develop SUPERSMART to increase its user-friendliness and accuracy. This work will involve collaboration between Chalmers, the University of Gothenburg and national and international collaborators
  • To link SUPERSMART with an improved, self-updating version of the PhyLoTa browser under construction (http://phylota.net/)
  • To run SUPERSMART analyses including all organisms sequenced to date
  • To carry out own research as well as provide some basic assistance to students and researchers using the platform, often under collaborative terms

 Eligibility

The applicant must hold a PhD in an area relevant for the tasks at hand (computational biology, molecular phylogenetics, bioinformatics, computer science, or related field). Note that the thesis must be awarded prior to the starting date. Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Applicants with a degree awarded earlier may also be preferred if specific reasons exist. Such specific reasons may be a leave due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Other required qualifications:

  • Documented capacity to work in groups and independently
  • Advanced skills in Perl and Unix-environments
  • Advanced skills in phylogenetics
  • Experience working with computer clusters (parallelised computing)
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English
                                                                   

Assessment (other desirable qualifications)

  • Experience in designing and maintaining web/graphical interfaces
  • Skills in other programming languages, such as python or R
  • Experience building very large phylogenetic trees
  • Experience with phylogenetic diversity metrics, molecular dating, biogeography, comparative phylogenetic analyses, ancestral trait evolution, and/or next-generation sequencing data
  • Experience with machine learning
  • Knowledge of Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood methods
  • Experience with UNIX system administration (installing and debugging programs etc.)

The top ranked candidates will be selected for an interview, which will be held in English and might be performed by phone /skype.
