The Swedish National Agency for Higher Education recently granted the University of Gothenburg and Lund University the right to award third cycle degrees in the arts.
The Swedish government has decided that a doctoral degree in the arts be introduced as a doctoral degree category in its own right. In the autumn of 2009, the University of Gothenburg and several other Swedish universities applied to the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education for the right to award the new degree in 2010. On 23 February, the University of Gothenburg and Lund University were informed that their applications had been approved.
The two Universities, and ten other higher education institutions, are also set to cooperate within the framework of the national graduate school for the arts that will be launched in 2010.
In its decision, the Agency notes that the University of Gothenburg is well equipped with the resources necessary to offer third cycle programmes in the arts and that the university’s artistic development work and artistic research are intimately linked. The Agency also acknowledges the high level of competency and extensive experience demonstrated by the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, and points out that the University of Gothenburg has good systems in place for quality assurance and for progression in art education.
