Introduction

In the centre of the city and in close contact with society

The University of Gothenburg is situated in the centre of the city and in close contact with society. With 37,000 students, we are one of the largest and most wide-ranging universities in Sweden. We know that students benefit from a good study environment, which includes easy access to cultural life, entertainment and the business world. This is one reason why most University premises are situated in the city centre. We also cooperate with several major Swedish corporations established in our area. The proximity to many significant employers in the region makes it easier for our graduates to find employment. The University of Gothenburg is also active in several global networks for research and education. This enables our students to interact, within both education and research, with some of the world’s most prominent higher education institutions.

Many applicants per student place

The University of Gothenburg has the highest number of applicants per student place for several programmes and courses, making us one of the most popular universities among young students. In addition, with 5,900 employees, of which 2,700 are teachers and doctoral students and 480 are professors, we are one of the most wide-ranging universities in the country. With eight Faculties and around 40 Departments, we have nearly unlimited opportunities to combine and vary both programmes and courses.

Breadth and diversity

The around 40 Departments and centres conduct research and development in a great range of scientific disciplines, from medicine and biotechnology to marine biology and opinion formation. We are particularly proud of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to Professor Arvid Carlsson for his research in neuropharmacology. Research related to the marine environment, for example development of non-toxic boat paint, constitutes an important part of the University’s research endeavours within the natural sciences. The University is characterised by breadth and diversity.
